Voluntourism 2.0

When the Wall Street Journal writes about the phenomenon of voluntourism you know it's graduated from the realm of backpacking young people and world wandering college drop-outs to the more 'mainstream' and up-market traveler.

This article is an interesting read covering the evolution of voluntourism from its early sometimes primitive beginnings to today?s more developmentally sophisticated approaches.

For those traveling to Siem Reap the article also highlighted an very interesting resource you should be aware of - Stay Another Day:

"One program called Stay Another Day, run by an arm of the World Bank, steers tourists via a Web site and booklets to pre-evaluated activities and businesses that benefit the local community. Visitors to the Sangkheum Center for Children, an orphanage in Siem Reap, Cambodia, can tour the center, play with children and, if they wish, purchase the silk wares residents have learned to make. The visit is free, but visitors are invited to make a donation."

I just checked it out and they have twenty interesting offers in Siem Reap, some I was aware of and many I was not.

Make sure you check it out before heading to Siem Reap and I urge you to do your best to include something like this on your itinerary!
