John McDermott - The Man Behind The Images

Posted by Leonard on February 23, 2009 at 11:05 AM

One of my favorite non-temple places to visit in Siem Reap is the McDermott Gallery in the FCC complex on Pokambar Avenue next to the Royal Residence. John McDermott's unusually stunning photography of the Angkor temples and many other UNESCO world heritage sights throughout Asia has become world famous.

McDermott's work is often captured on infrared film making the "...resulting images seem at once familiar and dreamlike - skies deepen in tone, while vegetation glows softly." In addition, he has been capturing the temples since the mid-nineties long before Angkor Wat became a mainstream tourist destination.

While limited edition prints of his work can be expensive, there is an ample selection of beautiful reprints for every budget. In this recent article you can read more about the man behind these evocative images.

And if you are interested in art while visiting Siem Reap, this article provides some great tips as well.
