Helpful links & tips

Here are some tips and links, based on my own experiences, that could be helpful. Links will open (should open - having a bit of technical issue with that) in a new window. This page is a work in progress.

Great place to start: If you want one great website to start researching a trip to Angkor Wat I highly recommend  Canby Publications .

Guide books and Angkor Wat information:

  • If you are interested in some alternative guidebooks or good sources that explain Angkor Wat from a fascinating cosmic perspective check out this article.
  • And here you can learn about a good pocket audio tour you can take in your Ipod or other mp3 player (on my Oct, '09 trip I used it sometimes and found it quite good).
  • One of the most interesting articles I have read about ancient Angkor is from Nat Geo's July, 2009 issue which you can find here online.
  • And there is the new (Dec '09) Siem Reap and Angkor Wat travel guide in an iPhone app from Travelfish .

Thru My Eyes: If you would like to know some more about me and my impressions of Cambodia you can read two articles I wrote shortly after my first amazing trip in October, 2007:  "Welcome to Cambodia""Give and You Shall Receive". You can also read my travelogue entries from my October, 2009 trip at "Leonard's Trails".

Holiday in Angkor Wat: I came across this great resource totally by accident. It is run by one of those people who went to Angkor Wat, fell in love with it and wanted to spread the word. There is a lot of helpful info there: temple info, great places often overlooked, travelogues, recommendations and more.

Cambodia's e-visa program: Note: There had been some online discussion about the online visa site, some technical difficulties and several fake sites. The site appears to be working fine again.

Lodging Tips

There must be around 200 hotels, guest houses and bed & breakfasts in Siem Reap in every price class imaginable. Here's a bit of what I have learned:

Tripadvisor: a great resource to explore various lodging options from the cheapest to the most expensive. Places are ranked and rated by fellow travelers. Have been very satisfied when using it.

Where have I personally stayed? On my three trips, I have made a point of staying at many different places so I could share my experiences with the website visitors. They are in the $20 - $120 price range. Excuses to the real budget travelers as I did not stay in any super inexpensive places. Including the place I stayed at in 2007, I was very happy with all of these six quite different places:

Golden Banana Boutique Hotel
The Villa Siem Reap
Seven Candles
Journeys Within Bed & Breakfast
Palm Village
Royal Bay Inn Angkor Resort
